Results For 2008 Intake Into Public Universities

Higher Education Department director-general Prof Datuk Dr Radin Umar Radin Sohadi who announced the results for the 2008/2009 intake into public universities said that 40,184 STPM and equivalent candidates, out of the 67,143 who applied, were offered places in the 20 public universities.

scrollThe breakdown of successful candidates was 62.19% bumiputra, 30.97% Chinese and 6.84% Indian. Successful female applicants made up 64.5% of the total number, in line with the past few years’ trend.

Not everyone who scored a 4.0 CGPA in the Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) or equivalent got his/her first choice when applying for a place in degree programmes in public universities. There are 1,963 candidates who applied for places had a CGPA of 4.0.

The meritocracy policy for intake into public universities was introduced in the 2002/2003 academic year. From 2006/2007, applicants were assessed based on academic achievement (90%) and co-curriculum involvement (10%).

There had been a slight drop in the number of places available for new students at the four research universities. This is because of the policy to accept more postgraduates there. The four research universities are Universiti Sains Malaysia, Universiti Malaya, Universiti Putra Malaysia and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia.
