Aminulrasyid Amzah’s Family Calls For Royal Commission

The family of the 15-year-old teenager, Aminulrasyid Amzah, who was shot dead by police on April 26 has called for a Royal Commission to investigate the incident.

Aminulrasyid’s uncle, Kamarudin Hassan, 45, who spoke on behalf of the family said the commission was hoped to do a clear and transparent investigation.

“We appreciate the Home Minister’s move to set up a special panel to investigate but we want a Royal Commission which is more transparent and comprehensive,” he told reporters at Aminulrasyid’s family home in Section 11 here.

Also present were Aminulrasyid’s mother Norsiah Mohamad and two lawyers representing Aminulrasyid’s family, N.Surendran and Latheefa Koya. In the 2am incident of the day, Aminulrasyid died after police shot at his car.

A special panel headed by the Deputy Home Minister, Datuk Wira Abu Seman Yusop, has been set up to investigate the incident.

Several quarters like the Bar Council, Perkasa (Pertubuhan Pribumi Perkasa Malaysia) and the police force want an inquest into the case.

Surendran said he wanted the Royal Commission to be established under the Commissions of Enquiry Act 1950 and the findings revealed to the public.

“A Royal Commission has vast powers and can summon witnesses and provide confidence to the government relating to the incident,” he said, adding that the commission needed to be set up soon.

Gempak (a movement to monitor government agencies) has called on all quarters to be clam and not exploit the matter of Aminulrasyid’s death for political purposes.

Deputy chairman I of Gempak, Yaakop Baba, said this was to provide police leeway to investigate in detail and not to come to a hasty and negative conclusion.

Meanwhile, lawyer and DAP chairman Karpal Singh said he has been appointed by Aminulrasyid Amzah’s family to act on their behalf in all legal matters and proceedings concerning the teenager’s death.

“I have been engaged to act on behalf of Aminulrasyid’s mother, Norsiah Mohamad, in all matters arising out of the death of her son, including initiation of legal proceedings against the police and the Government of Malaysia, both civil and criminal.

“I hope the police will give me every co-operation to ensure justice is served. The public interest demands it,” he told reporters at his office while showing his appointment letter here today.

He said Aminulrasyid’s mother had informed him of the family’s decision yesterday evening, however he was open to any assistance and had no problem working with other lawyers.

“I’m the only lawyer who had been appointed by the family but I am prepared to work with anyone including lawyer N. Surendran who has been speaking on behalf of the family since the incident,” he said.

Karpal said, the special panel which was set up following the fatal shooting and headed by Deputy Home Minister Datuk Wira Abu Seman Yusof, to identify what actually transpired in the incident, should be immediately disbanded.

He said as the incident has been classified as murder, there was no question of there being any inquest or any panel being set up to inquire into the circumstances leading to the teenager’s death.

Karpal said he would write to the Attorney-General about conducting a fair and thorough investigation and would hold a watching brief during court proceedings.

“Equally, it is wrong for the Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Musa Hassan to publicly defend his men as this will prejudice the investigation.. he should not prejudge, it is not his lot to do so” he said.

“But I fully support the statement by the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, that there should be no cover-up and that the investigation must be open and transparent as the public demanded this,” he said, adding that he would visit the scene of the shooting tomorrow with the family.

He added that re-assigning the four policemen concerned to desk duties was not proper as they should be suspended from duty until investigation was completed.
