Yoga Haram For Muslims

The National Fatwa Council has ruled that yoga is ‘haram” for Muslims. Its chairman, Datuk Dr Abdul Shukor Husin said only the physical aspect of yoga without the mantras and elements of worshipping outwardly was not wrong (in Islam).

However, he said, yoga was not to be encouraged among Muslims for fear that it could erode their Islamic faith since the physical part was a component of yoga practice as a whole.

He said there were three stages to yoga practice, which originated from the Hindus, — first, the physical aspect which is the exercise part; second the mantras and worshipping and third the unification of oneself with God.

“Therefore, members of the council reached a consensus that any practice, regardless of type and in whatever form that have such elements, contradict Islamic teachings,” he told a press conference here.

Abdul Shukor said the matter was decided at the 83rd National Fatwa Council meeting held in Kota Baharu from Oct 22 to 24 and that the decision would be conveyed to the respective state religious councils for gazetting.

He said yoga practice among Muslims had also been banned in Singapore and Egypt.

Abdul Shukor said various programmes would be carried out by the Islamic Development Department (Jakim) to enlighten Muslims on yoga.

He also advised Muslims to get information on any exercise programme before practising them to ensure that they would not affect their religious faith.

He said there were many other ways which Muslims could do to exercise for health, like praying.

Yoga has been practised since 3000 BC and is said to be able to slow down the ageing process, reduce the risk of diabetes, asthma and heart-related diseases.

Muslim clerics are mentally lazy. Read and get out there to find out before making fatwas.

    Praying is not an exercise.

Chanting is not necessary in Yoga. Meditation is; which is a branch to Yoga practise and it is very good for mind and body. Chanting is just a short simple word that can be choosen from words that brings meaning to the practitioner and it can be the name of Allah for example.

I personally experience many good things to my health from practicing yoga especially to my wellbeing. I feel calm and more focus which cannot be compared to praying alone.

With this lame fatwas no wonder many Muslims these days are secretly leaving Islam.

Malaysia has Muslim clerics who split hairs till their heads go absolutely bald of any sensibility left in it.

For crying out loud, don’t they perform some of these Yoga positions whey they are having sex and chanting to their partners?

Yoga is not haram. Do not buy into these uneducated people who say that it is in the Quran that yoga (even the physical part of Yoga) is a sin.
The physical aspect of yoga is not haram at all! I don’t know where people come up with these things but they are pretty… not right there.
Maybe its another reason for the uneducated (and professers who paid their way out of university) to be lazy?

There is no place and no where it says that Yoga is haram, any form of Yoga!
for example if you say “om” during Yoga. You can say “Ya Allah” or whatever you like.

THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH YOGA!

I am a muslim too and I have studied this for years.

When will people learn? Thats the question.

yoga means union… union with god -mentally chanting mantra…union of mind and body with meditation …plus union of mind body and soul(god, allah ,cosmos ,universal spirit call what u may)with set of simple exercise techniques that can cure lot of disease…i cant see who are these religious people who says fatwa for yoga or union with such divine knowledge…what fools ..allah bless them with some logic and free muslims from such hypocrites

OK…everyone thinks that he/she knows more than these scholars. the quran is much more complex….In these comments i have seen comments like yoga helps cure diseases and helps u keep calm and so on and thus u think it isnt haram…THIS IS EXACTLY Y IT IS CONSIDERED HARAM…ur beliving in something else in curing diseases and help u keep calm when its allah (SWT) who decides what happens and we should be beliving in god and do zikr and recite to keep our selves calm….5 times prayer is a form of excersise…wen u go down to sujood and keep ur forhead on the floor in the direction of the kibla its supposed to draw out all of ur tention out of ur head…and this shouldn just simply done as a duty you should pray from within ur heart and appreciate each and everything that has been created by god…jus by doing this u achieve everything u achieve by doing yoga excersises….and pls dont call scholars fools cuz theyve dedicated their lives to understanding and interpreting the qoran which i dont think none of url who rote these comments have done….prayer isnt any form of excersie? well that shows how much yourl knoe…ppl say all kinds of things to justify your wrong doings…theres no better way to get the positive energy flowing through you than worshiping allah swt and appreciating his creations…if yoga does all these wonderful things then y didnt prophet mohamed do that since he is smarter than any human being living on this planet…
