Nurin’s Family Suing Police

Jazimin Abdul Jalil, father of Nurin Jazlin, who went missing and was later found murdered, filed two suits against the police and the government today, for negligence and defamation.

Nurin FatherThe suits were over the circulation of pictures on the post-mortem on Nurin and the alleged defamatory statement that he lost his daughter because of involvement with “Ah Long” or loan sharks.

Jazimin, 34, filed the suits at the Civil High Court registry.

He is seeking general, exemplary and aggravated damages, interest, cost and other reliefs deemed fit by the court in the negligence suit but did not specify the quantum.

Anwar Ibrahim Freed On Bail

Police freed Malaysian opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim on bail Thursday after holding him overnight in connection with a sodomy accusation that abruptly suspended his campaign to unseat the government.

In a cell phone text message to reporters, Anwar’s lawyer Sankara Nair said his client, who was held overnight at the police headquarters, was “granted police bail.”

Police arrested Anwar on Wednesday for questioning over allegations that he sodomized a 23-year-old male aide, the second time in a decade that such an accusation has threatened his political career.

Sivarasa Rasiah, an opposition lawmaker, said Anwar left police headquarters from the back entrance in a car with his wife while reporters were waiting in the front. Sivarasa said Anwar was told to report to police on Aug. 18.

Anwar Ibrahim Arrested

Police arrested Malaysian opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim on Wednesday 16 July 2008, less than an hour before a deadline for him to appear at police headquarters to answer allegations that he sodomized a male aide.

About a dozen policemen, some of them wearing balaclavas, cordoned off the road leading to Anwar’s house and stopped his car, said his lawyer Sankara Nair. The policemen informed Anwar that they had orders to arrest him, said his lawyer Sankara Nair.

“They arrested him. No reason was given,” said Nair. He said Anwar was bundled into a police car and taken to the police headquarters. No one else from Anwar’s entourage was allowed to get into the car with him, he said. There was no trouble or violence.
