Although the Jan 17 battle for the Kuala Terengganu parliamentary seat is a three-cornered fight, it will boil down to a straight contest between Umno and the opposition Pas. And Umno is coming across as the underdog.



When nominations closed yesterday, three candidates made the cut: Umno’s Datuk Wan Ahmad Farid Salleh, Pas’s Abdul Wahid Endut and independent Azharuddin Mamat.

PM Says No To Emergency Parliament Session

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Badawi says he will not reconvene Parliament next Tuesday, as demanded by Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

UMNO Press Conference“I do not see any reason to call an emergency sitting as we are sitting after Ramadan,” he said after today’s Umno supreme council meeting here.

Earlier today, Anwar had demanded the PM reconvene Parliament next week to vote on a no-confidence motion against Abdullah’s administration.

The demand comes just days after Anwar missed a self-imposed deadline on September 16 for his Pakatan Rakyat (PR) alliance to topple the Barisan Nasional (BN) government through mass defections

Today Pakatan Rakyat leaders have submitted a letter to the Prime Minister requesting him to call an emergency session of Parliament to deliberate a motion of censure against the leadership of YAB Dato’ Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi no later than Tuesday 23 September 2008.

Anwar Seeks Emergency House Session

Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim wants Parliament to convene by Sept 23 for him to table a vote of no confidence against Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

He said that a letter signed by him, the DAP’s Lim Kit Siang and Pas president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang, representing the Pakatan Rakyat alliance, had been sent to the PM to request him to convene Parliament by next Tuesday.

“We have told him we have the numbers. If he wants the details and doesn’t believe me, then convene the emergency sitting,” he told reporters at PKR headquarters here today.

He insisted it was critical for the PM to respond as “it is important to think of the nation and not themselves. They are a minority government, the majority is with us.

Anwar’s Back In Parliament As Opposition Leader

Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim ended his 10-year absence from Parliament when he was sworn in at 10.05am by Speaker Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia in the Dewan Rakyat.

Anwar Ibrahim In ParliamentHe can now drop the “de facto” prefix from his position as opposition leader as Pandikar Amin confirmed the endorsement by Pakatan Rakyat of his leadership immediately after the swearing-in.

“According to Standing Order 4A(3), I wish to inform that from the feedback I have received, I am satisfied that Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, MP for Permatang Pauh, has received unanimous support from opposition members to be appointed opposition leader,” the speaker told the House to the loud table-thumping by opposition MPs which had soundtracked the entire swearing-in ceremony.

Permatang Pauh Election Result

Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim won the Permatang Pauh by-election, but what was impressive was the margin of victory.

Anwar Ibrahim Won Permatang Pauh By-ElectionThe PKR leader was returned to Parliament with a majority of 15,671 votes, exceeding the 13,388-vote majority achieved by his wife Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail in the March 8 general election.

Anwar garnered 31,195 votes to beat Barisan candidate Datuk Arif Shah Omar Shah, who garnered 15,524 votes, while low-key Angkatan Keadilan Insan Malaysia candidate Hanafi Hamat lost his RM15,000 deposit after getting only 92 votes.

Permatang Pauh: Nomination Aug 16 Polling Aug 26

The Election Commission today announced August 16 as nomination day and August 26 as polling day for the Permatang Pauh parliamentary constituency by-election.

SPRThree-term MP Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail quit the seat last week to give her husband Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim an opportunity to enter Parliament as sodomy charges loom.

Anwar, who is the de facto leader of the Pakatan Rakyat coalition comprising his Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), Democratic Action Party (DAP) and Parti Islam Se-Malaysia (Pas), is expected to win easily in the seat which is also his hometown.

Anwar Ibrahim To Contest Permatang Pauh

In the wake of rumours on Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s imminent arrest, his wife Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Ismail today resigned as Permatang Pauh MP to make way for him to contest in a by-election.

Anwar and Wan AzizahDr Wan Azizah, the parliamentary opposition leader who will keep her Parti Keadilan Rakyat president’s post, said she also sent the resignation letter to Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia today.

Pandikar, who is in Sabah at the moment and will respond on Monday, is expected to notify the Election Commission immediately. A by-election must be called within 60 days after the notification date.
