Anwar Trial Transfer, Court Can Hear Objections

The Sessions Court here on Tuesday ruled that it had the discretion to hear submissions on the defence objection questioning the validity of the certificate produced by the prosecution to transfer Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s sodomy case to the High Court.

Anwar Saiful CaseJudge S.M.Komathy Suppiah rejected the preliminary objection by the prosecution which contended that it was mandatory for the Sessions Court, under Section 418A (3) of the Criminal Procedure Code, to transfer the case to the High Court once the transfer certificate had been issued by the prosecution.

MISC Tankers Freed By Pirates

Both Malaysian International Shipping Corporation (MISC) tankers, hijacked in the Gulf of Aden by Somali pirates, have been freed.

MT Bunga Melati DuaDefence Ministry director of public relations, Colonel Fadzlette Othman Merican told Bernama that the vessel, MT Bunga Melati Dua was released at 4.14am 29 September and was now heading towards Djibouti, East Africa, with all the crew in good health except for a Filipino sailor who was shot dead in a crossfire when the ship was taken hostage on Aug 19.

Singapore GP: Formula One First Night Race

Spain’s Fernando Alonso snapped a year-long win drought to take the Singapore Grand Prix Sunday, winning a drama-filled first ever night race as a comical error cost Felipe Massa dearly.

Fernando AlonsoIt was the Renault driver’s first victory since the Italian Grand Prix last year and capped a remarkable weekend that saw him top two of the free practice sessions but start 15th on the grid after a mechanical problem in qualifying.

He claimed his 20th career triumph by 2.95 seconds over Germany’s Nico Rosberg in a Williams and Britain’s world championship leader Lewis Hamilton in third.

Anwar Trial Transfer, Court To Decide On October 7

The Sodomy II trial of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has been postponed yet again, after Sessions Court judge S.M. Komathy Suppiah ordered a two-week recess so she can decide on whether to allow the prosecution’s application to transfer the case to the High Court.

At the previous hearing on Sept 10, Senior Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) Datuk Yusof Zainal Abiden, submitted a certificate of transfer to move the Sodomy II trial to the High Court.

Raja Petra Detained For 2 Years Under ISA

A prominent political blogger was jailed for two years under a strict security law that can keep him in prison indefinitely, a lawyer said today.

Raja Petra Detained Under ISAOnline commentator Raja Petra Kamarudin, known for his anti-government views, was already in police custody and was served a detention order last night, said his lawyer Malik Imtiaz Sarwar.
