Malaysian police yesterday released a journalist who was arrested under a tough security law, amid widespread anger, alarm and questions over the use of the Internal Security Act (ISA).
Sin Chew Daily reporter Tan Hoon Cheng returned to her relative’s house in Taman Alma near here after a day in detention under the Internal Security Act and almost broke down in tears as she was warmly hugged by anxious family members and friends.
The 33-year-old, however, quickly regained her composure and spoke to her family members for 20 minutes before heading to stay at a friend’s house for the night.
Clad in a pale orange T-shirt and jeans, Hoon Cheng was dropped off at her home by four police officers including a policewoman in a four-wheel drive vehicle at 4pm yesterday.

Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s Sodomy II trial was today postponed to Sept 24 following objections from his defence team over the Attorney-General Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail’s involvement.
The objection was a clear sign of how politics will continue to play a major part in this highly-charged trial, in which Anwar has already accused the Attorney-General and the Inspector-General of Police of being involved in a conspiracy against him.
It also showed Anwar’s legal team would not be prepared to give an inch to the prosecution and was likely to challenge their every move.
Today, S.M. Komathy Suppiah, the Criminal Sessions Court judge presiding over the case, was supposed to set the dates for his trial to begin.

An official says more than 50 Barisan Nasional MPs are travelling together to Taiwan amid jitters about opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s threat to recruit enough defectors from the government to seize power by next week.
The opposition has accused the BN ruling coalition of sending its MPs overseas to keep them away from Anwar and to prevent him from enlisting government legislators to join the opposition by Sept 16 — the date he has vowed to take power.
Tiong King Sing, chairman of the BN Backbenchers Club, said more than 40 lawmakers flew to Taiwan for an agricultural study tour today and that around 10 more will join them tomorrow. The trip will stretch through next week, but there is no confirmed date for their return.
Tiong denied the visit was timed to foil Anwar’s threat.
