Abdullah Defence Minister Najib Finance Minister

In a minor Cabinet reshuffle today, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi named his deputy Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak as finance minister.

Abdullah and NajibAbdullah, who was the finance minister, will take over Najib’s defence ministry portfolio.

In making the announcement yesterday, Abdullah and Najib also said the transition plan in which the two leaders have agreed on remains intact.

By giving his deputy heavier responsibilities, the PM will hope to put an end to speculation over the transition plan which will see Najib taking power by 2010.

The swap in portfolios was announced after today’s Cabinet meeting.

Najib has also been made deputy chairman of Khazanah Nasional.

Racial tensions have been rising, exacerbated by the propaganda spread in the government owned mainstream media. The administration has offered no vision to steer the nation out of this quagmire and there is manifest erosion in confidence in the current government.

We in Pakatan Rakyat believe we can save Malaysia from economic ruin and the dangerous politics of racism. We will do so prudently, legally and in doing so we will not jeopardize the security and stability of the country and the safety of its people.

Anwar Ready To Form The Government

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi’s fate was hanging in the balance after opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim claimed last night he had secured the necessary backing to topple the prime minister by his self-imposed deadline of today.

PM Rejects Zaid’s Resignation

De facto Law Minister Datuk Zaid Ibrahim is not out of the Cabinet just yet.

Zaid IbrahimPrime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Badawi rejected the letter of resignation Zaid sent in today, telling him instead to take a two-week break.

Sources told The Malaysian Insider that Zaid informed the PM that he felt compelled to quit the Cabinet on a matter of principle because he disagreed with the use of the Internal Security Act on journalist Tan Hong Cheng, DAP MP Teresa Kok and blogger Raja Petra Kamarudin.

He felt that a minister or government official who is at odds with the policy or decision of the administration must offer his resignation.

Abdullah said issues and matters could be discussed and thrashed out in Cabinet.

Tan Hoon Cheng Released

Malaysian police yesterday released a journalist who was arrested under a tough security law, amid widespread anger, alarm and questions over the use of the Internal Security Act (ISA).

Tan Hoon chengSin Chew Daily reporter Tan Hoon Cheng returned to her relative’s house in Taman Alma near here after a day in detention under the Internal Security Act and almost broke down in tears as she was warmly hugged by anxious family members and friends.

The 33-year-old, however, quickly regained her composure and spoke to her family members for 20 minutes before heading to stay at a friend’s house for the night.

Clad in a pale orange T-shirt and jeans, Hoon Cheng was dropped off at her home by four police officers including a policewoman in a four-wheel drive vehicle at 4pm yesterday.

Teresa Kok and Sin Chew Reporter Arrested Under ISA

Malaysia Today news portal editor Raja Petra Kamarudin, Seputeh MP Teresa Kok and Sin Chew Daily reporter Tan Hoon Cheng were arrested under the Internal Security Act (ISA) in Kuala Lumpur and in Penang.

Teresa KokDAP’s Seputeh MP Teresa Kok is also assemblyman for Kinrara and a senior executive councillor in charge of investment, industry and trade.

Kok, 43, is believed to have been picked up in connection with a residents petition in Puchong over a mosque.

Former mentri besar Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Khir Toyo had allegedly accused Kok of being involved.

She subsequently denied the allegation and demanded an apology from Dr Mohd Khir and the newspaper which reported it.
