By-Elections Waste Of Funds

Monday, April 20th, 2009 | Pilihan Raya, Politik with No Comments »

Malaysia’s leader has said the ruling coalition may sit out an upcoming by-election sparked by the resignation of an opposition lawmaker, decrying it as a political ploy and a waste of public funds.

Prime Minister Najib Razak was quoted by the Sunday Star as saying that he would meet leaders of his National Front coalition at the end of the month to decide whether to contest the by-election in northern Penang state.

A lawmaker from former deputy premier Anwar Ibrahim’s opposition alliance quit his state assembly seat recently following unsubstantiated allegations of corruption. A date for the ballot to fill the seat will be decided soon.

Pakatan Rakyat Won Bukit Gantang And Bukit Selambau

Wednesday, April 8th, 2009 | Pilihan Raya, Politik with No Comments »

Malaysia’s opposition won two of three by-elections held Tuesday, dealing a blow to Prime Minister Najib Razak who took power last week with pledges to carry out wide-ranging government and social reforms.

The results do not change the balance of power at federal or state level but serve as an unofficial referendum on Najib’s popularity. The ruling National Front coalition downplayed the loss, saying Najib was yet to make his mark.

“The feel-good factor from the power transition is still too new and has not sunk in,” Najib’s right-hand man, Muhyiddin Yasin, told reporters while conceding defeat.

Wan Ahmad Farid Is BN Choice For Kuala Terengganu

Sunday, December 21st, 2008 | Pilihan Raya, Politik with 1 Comment

There were no surprises today in the naming of Senator Wan Ahmad Farid Wan Salleh as Barisan Nasional’s (BN) candidate for the crucial Kuala Terengganu by-election, but the controversies surrounding him and his close links with the prime minister will be campaign fodder for Pakatan Rakyat.

For Wan Farid, who is also Kuala Terengganu Umno division chief and the deputy home minister, his political career is riding on the election as he has been told that he will not be reappointed senator again if he loses the vote.

The Terengganu state assembly nominated the deputy home minister as senator recently as his first term ends in January.

The selection of Wan Ahmad Farid was announced by Deputy Prime Mnister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, who said the decision had the consent of Prime Minister and Umno president Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

Ustaz Ramlang Porigi Revelation On Saiful’s Oath

Monday, August 25th, 2008 | Pilihan Raya, Politik with 1 Comment

The imam who witnessed Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan“s swearing on the Quran to accuse Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim of sodomising him has cast doubts on the oath.

Ustaz Ramlang PorigiWith less than a day to campaign in the Permatang Pauh by-election, observers noted that the Barisan Nasional“s strongest point of attack against the former deputy prime minister has been blunted.

This means the public confession by Ramlang Porigi, the imam of the Kuala Lumpur mosque, made in Permatang Pauh late last night has freed Anwar from having to take the same Quranic vow to prove his innocence.

Tun Dr Mahathir Post Election Press Conference

Monday, March 10th, 2008 | Pilihan Raya with No Comments »

Are you surprised by the results?

I think it’s shocking. Although I expected BN to lose but I did not think that they lost five states.

I’m sorry that I made the wrong choice in Pak Lah. I never expected a PM to reverse all the policies of the government. So I think the people on the whole must have been very angry. All the three communities, the Chinese, the Malays and the Indians, have reacted.

Will Tun pressure Pak Lah to resign?

I think he should accept responsibility for this. Just as in 2004, the huge majority, the huge victory was purportedly due to him 100 percent. Now he should accept 100 percent of the responsibility.

What do you mean by taking responsibility?

He has destroyed Umno, destroyed BN. And he has to be responsible for this terrible defeat.

If he doesn’t want to take responsibility, do you think that Umno will do something to make him go?

I think Umno people on the ground are fearful of this man as they have never been before. During my time they would challenge me. Here I was not allowed to speak. I was given invitations to give talk to Umno members but these were withdrawn. They say that the police told them to withdraw it.
