40 Richest Malaysians For 2008 By Forbes

Malaysian tycoon Tan Sri Robert Kuok continues to maintain his lead position as Malaysia’s richest man in the latest Forbes Asia’s rich list.

Forbes Asia Malaysia's 40 RichestAccording to Forbes Asia, Kuok, 84, who has many businesses, including Hong Kong property and media interests, and most notably palm oil giant Wilmar, increased his net worth from US$2.4 billion last year to hit US$10 billion.

The latest ranking list also saw Berjaya Corp’s Tan Sri Vincent Tan joining the billionaires’ club, Forbes Asia said in a news release here.

There are 10 billionaires in the list this year, one more than last year.

Tan, who rose from 14th to ninth position, has a net worth of US$1.3 billion, up nearly US$1 billion from last year.

Forbes Asia said Tans company, Berjaya Corporation, had bucked the trend with its stock price up nearly three-fold over the past 12 months.

Dr Mahathir Quit Umno

Former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and veteran party man Tan Sri Sanusi Junid announced Monday that they are quitting Umno.

Dr Mahathir Mohamad announced this on Monday at 12.35pm, citing a lack of confidence in the current leadership.

“I am quitting Umno today,” he told about 1,000 people, mostly Kedah Umno members, at a talk here on Monday.

“I will write a letter to Umno headquarters to inform that I have quit the party,” he said.


He has been critical of his appointed successor Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, blaming the current Umno president for the party’s disappointing performance in the 12th general election. Read the rest of this entry »

Suruhanjaya DiRaja yang menyiasat skandal klip video Lingam mengesyorkan supaya mantan perdana menteri Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad dan lima orang lagi disiasat berhubung peranan mereka dalam pelantikan hakim-hakim.

Laporan Suruhanjaya DiRaja Video VK LingamLima tokoh tersebut - dua bekas ketua hakim negara, Tun Ahmad Fairuz Sheikh Abdul Halim dan Tun Eusoff Chin, peguam kanan Datuk VK Lingam, bekas menteri pelancongan Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor yang juga setiausaha agung Umno serta tokoh perniagaan Tan Sri Vincent Tan.

Suruhanjaya itu mengesyorkan supaya mereka disiasat bawah Akta Hasutan, Akta Rahsia Rasmi (OSA), Kanun Keseksaan dan kerana menghalang proses keadilan.

Menteri di Jabatan Perdana Menteri Datuk Zaid Ibrahim berkata hari ini bahawa kabinet telah mengarahkan Pejabat Peguam Negara untuk memulakan siasatan secepat mungkin terhadap keenam-enam mereka.

Sebelum itu, Zaid berkata kerajaan memutuskan untuk mengumumkan laporan suruhanjaya diraja itu.

Orang ramai boleh membeli laporan tersebut mulai minggu depan pada harga RM542.10 senaskhah.

Amirsham Blunders By Reading From Text

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Amirsham A. Aziz – a newbie in the administration – was caught with his pants down when he was spotted reading the answer to a supplementary question in Parliament today.

AmirshamIronically, the topic was the New Economic Policy (NEP) – already a controversial subject – and the first supplementary question was posed by Khairy Jamaluddin (BN-Rembau).

Amirsham was meat to the prey when the Pakatan Rakyat (PR) parliamentarians pounced – all with a wide grin on their face – on his antics of bowing his head to read from his prepared text.

Lim Kit Siang (DAP-Ipoh Timur) was the first to let all hell loose in the House, saying the supplementary question was already prepared.

“It was a planted question. The answer is all ready,” charged Chong Eng (DAP-Bukit Mertajam).

Raja Petra Released On Bail

Malaysia Today editor Raja Petra Raja Kamarudin who was released on bail Friday said that he did not go on “hunger strike” in prison.

Raja PetraHe also vowed to continue updating his Malaysia Today news portal in a day or two.

Raja Petra, 58, said he had refused to eat because “prison food is paid by the rakyat.”

“I do not think the rakyat’s money is well spent, so I refused to eat any food,” he said after his release on a RM5,000 bail at the court premises.

The father of five said he had not eaten any food since he was charged in the Sessions Court here on Tuesday for sedition.

“Since I could not have food from outside, I did not eat at all. I want to go back and have breakfast now. I am dehydrated,” said Raja Petra who smiled and immediately drank a bottle of mineral water supplied by his wife Marina Lee Abdullah.

Raja Petra and Syed Akbar Charged

Police slapped sedition charges on a blogger and an author, setting the stage for sensational trials later in the year.

The two men are Malaysia Today webmaster Raja Petra Raja Kamarudin and businessman and writer Syed Akbar Ali who had allegedly posted seditious remarks on the former’s website. Both pleaded not guilty.

Raja Petra Raja KamarudinRaja Petra was charged in a sessions court here under Section 4(1)(c) of the Sedition Act 1948 with publishing a seditious article titled “Let’s Send the Altantuya Murderers to Hell” in his blog www.malaysia-today.net on April 25. He allegedly committed the offence in his house, No. 5, Jalan BRP 5/5, Bukit Rahman Putra, Sungai Buloh.

The 58-year-old charismatic blogger caused a stir when he refused to take up judge Nurmala Salim’s bail offer of RM5,000, choosing instead to go to Sungai Buloh prison, until the trial fixed for Oct 6-10.

If found guilty, Raja Petra can be jailed a maximum of three years and/or face a fine of up to RM5,000.

Raja Petra was represented by a six lawyers - Bukit Gelugor MP Karpal Singh, K. Balaguru, PKR’s Selayang MP William Leong, J. Chandra, DAP’s Segambut MP Lim Lip Eng and Jeswinderjit Singh.
